growing a memory

Proposed for Eumundi Township, Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Queensland
Growing a memory embraces the concept of art as a gift and to this end this project will create for the community a sculptural “living” arbour: a commemorative work, which will reclaim for the community their space, their park and their memories.  The inspiration for this work is sustainability and the broader possibilities of working with ‘living’ materials for sustainable structures and showcasing ecologically design principles and innovation in art practices.
The arbour will be grown in the memorial walk precinct of Eumundi township, providing a place of reflection, remembrance, yet also encompassing the here and now, the ebb and flow of the community beneath its’ branches. This organic sculptural piece will be entrusted to the community to nurture and groom as custodians for future generations.  In reprising the planting of trees as a metaphor for remembrance and endurance the project acknowledges trees as the eternal witness to community life and history.   Beneath the bower daily life goes on, individuals connect as community, communities intertwine to create strength.  Growing a Memory will be a fully integrated work, which will enhance and harmonize with the setting taking into account local topography, history and geography.
Extending beyond the memorial and commemorative aspect of this work, it provides the opportunity to create a ‘living’ element that exemplifies the environmental ‘green’ qualities of the Treeline project and the parklike atmosphere the markets portrays to the broader community and its visitors. While supporting an eco practice as a permanent work in so doing becoming a draw card to a boarder public.
